because they are the only way to look at alternative outcomes in history. How do we prevent similar bad things from happening in the future? As it is, Japan was able to make an uncomfortable headway against a weak and divided China even late into the war (see Ichi-go). The Japanese lacked decent logistics and their army and navy quarreled against each other to a degree that would be unbelievable in any other country, yet had they confined their attentions to China and not foolishly chosen to fight every other country, they might have had a chance at victory. We should take that lesson to heart.
